Sociedade Nacional de Combustíveis de Angola – Sonangol E.P., was created in 1976 following the nationalisation of Angol. The state oil company is the sole concessionaire for the exploration of liquid and gaseous hydrocarbons in Angola’s subsoil and continental platform. Its business activities include the prospecting, research, development, marketing, production, storage, transportation and refining of hydrocarbons and their derivatives, and can be conducted autonomously or jointly with foreign companies. It currently has some 11,000 employees.
Angola is the second largest oil producer in Sub-Saharan Africa, and it exports to countries in Europe, America and Asia. It has recently exported its first consignment of liquefied natural gas to Brazil and the discovery of presalt in deepwater was a milestone. With 17 Subsidiaries and joint venture companies, it has expanded its core business and today is a self-made multinational company.
